The last thing (for now) that I would like to suggest is something possible to see in a game like Counter-Strike, that although I dont know how it works, seems to simulate a parallel projection of light (the Sun), and affects the map as a whole, creating shadows according to the angle specified on all objects/buildings.
I don't know how it would affect gameplay speed, but I guess its obvious and Janis has always done this systematicly, that framerate consuming features could be deactivated.
