If you didn't know it, there's a FreeBSD port of Vavoom. It has been recently updated to latest version. For more info see http://www.freshports.org/games/vavoom

How would I go about if I'd want to compile/run the FreeBSD version on OS X?

I don't know it OS X has FreeBSD's port system. I can tell you for sure that ACS scripts won't work since Raven's implementation assumed them to be in host byte order and Vavoom has partial byte swapping. The rest should work.
