[No] zipped wads?

I'd like to have the possibility to load gzipped or/and bzip2ed wads. This would really be a big space saver. I tried "bzip2 -9" on heretic.wad and: 11Megs->4.6Megs This is really nice. And since bzip2- and gzip-libs are available on windows and unix at least this shouldn't be a problem. bye. Duke42.

But that would mean either way longer startup time or slower game performance, or am I mistaken?

Compressed wad files is an interesting idea. And of course it will be a little bit slower, but not that much.

Actually I had similar idea for other purposes. With the new filesystem some data (such as models) are in seperate files and it would be nice to put them all in some pak files and do it like in Quake III Arena - with zip files (if somebody didn't know the pk3 files are zip files).

Oh, that does sound promising ... you mean I wouldn't have to uncompress vmdl-doom.zip? But the zipped wads are my favourite so far .

and Ramborc: you wouldn't have to use it. You could just go with uncompressed wad-files and I would go with the compressed ones.

bye. Duke42.

Ahhh :o Zipped WadFiles?

That might make it easier to add .tga flats/textures
or larger levels.

A zip file /w sub directories such as
map01/blockmap
map02/blockmap

so I can include larger blockmaps and replace any
parts of the wad the are corrupt without damaging
the rest of the wad.

The main directory would of cource ;) be called IWAD
or PWAD depending on the file type.

Maps could be in some kind of simplified programming language to describe game geometry and level structor.

I think there's a tool to describe levels as code--woulden't it be cool :D if VaVoom could understand that code and compile levels on the fly.

PK3 is here, no to bzipped wads.
