[Implemented] Wild goose chase...

Col.J.P.

Greetings Gentlemen
This may very well be a shot in the dark, but is there any chance that the Vavoom engine may, one day, work with the full retail version of Strife?
This is currently the only Doom-engine based game with no port of any kind (opengl/D3D/3dfx)...I think that the source code was never released...Is this the reason?
I really like Vavoom in Doom and Heretic, and I really miss Strife(never been able to finish it)...
I would be a blast if you guys could be able to improved this great old RPG!
Thank you very much for your attention.
Sincerely yours

J.P. :'(

quattj

Ahhh, your guess is correct. They say the reason they haven't been able to completely support is is because of the very fact that the source was never released. I suppose if they do release the source code for Strife, 'twould be much much easier to get better compatibility with it.

Lost?humm...That explains a lot of things!
Listen, Janis, is not possible to analize a graphic engine and work it from the within? How did you do it to make Vavoom work w/ the demo version?

Some things (like mobjinfos) can be stripped from the executable.

Dialogs and such have to be investigated by men. I don't really see any way to get them out of the game easily - it requires playing game a lot and reproducing all you saw...

Other ideas?
Sat, 02 Feb 2002 03:02:50

Janis Legzdinsh

Yes, the list of things, states, sprite names, animations, switches etc were stripped from executable.

Dialogs are stored in wad lumps and I know the format except the meaning of some data. Background pic name is created from sprite name. The only problem is commands.

Well...It seems to be a gigantic task then...Never mind.
I only asked because another guy made a D3D port for
Darkforces, a couple of years ago, without any source code(never been released either). Janis, in my (full) version some dialogs are in the executable!

Yes, those generic random answers are in the executable.

I might be wrong (don't have Strife installed so can't check it), but I remember some dialogs with the Oracle were there as well.

I must say that I don't know what Oracle is since I have only the shareware version. I discovered Strife only about a year ago and I have no idea where I could get the full version :(

I only have the pirated version with speech ripped off, still it's about 50mb... would be very hard to find the full [legal] one, indeed.
