[Fixed] Strife voices repeating

Hmmm. When I play Strife, I only get the first voice repeated over and over any time someone talks. With v1.15b1 it would be whatever the first guys says when giving you a quest, and now with 1.15.1 it's "The comet struck without warning..." every time someone talks. I'm using vlaunch, with the "no 3D sound" box checked. Could it be my wad file? Or does it do this for others as well? The size and date on strife1.wad are : 28,377,364 bytes Thursday, May 23, 1996 6:03:58 PM and voices.wad: 27,319,149 bytes Monday, April 15, 1996 3:49:46 PM Both work fine in my original strife

Strange, this happened only with older versions of Vavoom where convo support wasn't yet in. ???

Yes, it's a bit strange, because for me all voices are playing correcly.

Hmm, so now I am *really* confused... ???

If I remember correctly, you guys should have the same Strife as I do, on account of I told you where to get it so long ago ;D

Would the debug file help at all? Or maybe my system specs? Does my "voices.wad" match up with what you have?

I'm using Win98 on a PII 266 with 256 MB of RAM, a TNT2M64 video card, ummm... my sound card is built-in (ESS1869 I think... SB compatible, no 3D audio capability)

The .gwa file from an older version of Vavoom wouldn't make it do that, would it? Hmmm, let me check... I'll try deleting it and have ot rebuild...

Bah. Nope. I tried running it in software mode as well... nothing.
I also tried running it without using vlaunch. Nothing

Me confused. :-/

I just tried the DOS version (from within Windows) and the voices play as they should, but the intro segments go too quickly and the talking gets chopped in the middle somewhere...

"The comet struck our plant without warning.
We lost our para...
(switches to next screen)
The impact released a virus that (etc...)

[...]

They destroy our women and children
So that we must hide them undergound
And live like...
(switches to next screen)
But there are whispers of discontent (etc...)

Other than that, it seems OK (I can hear the whole conversations in-game)

The duration of intro screens haven't been adjusted to correctly match voices.

I had the same problem with voices repeating until I changed to "Use OpenAL". Now the intro sequence is ok and ingame too!

Blackbird is still silent though! isn't solved yet or?
I don't get so far in single player - get stuck after a while?

Sometimes it crashes when changing map with:
- Z_Malloc
- SV_LoadMap
- SV_MapTeleport
- ServerFrame
- Host_Frame

ERROR: Z_Malloc: failed on allocation of 25000 bytes

I'm running on Win XP with an SB Live!

/Moon[Drunk]

That's because of not enough memory, you can change that to a higher value with -maxzone (there are several topics on this here).

I had the same problem, switching to OpenAL solved the voice problem, although then I lost the music. Blackbird is silent either way, pity, this game is getting really close to being fully playable again.

running on Windows XP SP1
SB Audigy

ERROR: Z_Malloc: failed on allocation of 25000 bytes
Actually this most likely has something to deal with -minzone option.

So, the problem with voices is only with DirectSound. Must check it.

And yes, the Blackbird's voices are not yet implemented.

I think I found where was the problem with voices. Probably I was using OpenAL while testing and that's why it was working fine for me.

Well, that's why you have us, eh Janis?

Aside from that, all this talk about Strife has convinced me to buy the game. Soon I shall be testing Vavoom's cutting-edge features!

I think it's abandon ware, so you can download it for free legally.

If I'd be living in the US, I'd gladly spend the $9.95 for a factory sealed box of Strife incl. shipping (but half.com doesn't allow for buyers outside of the US, damn their eyes).
