I used to run Vavoom in a Pentium III- 1Ghz/512Mb Ram/Geforce 3 and everything went fine, not even slowdowns...
Three weeks ago I changed to my other machine which is a Pentium III- 667 Mhz/386 MB Ram and a Voodoo 3- 3500 and tried to install Vavoom 1.2 with the hexen.wad but things got messy:
Everything fine in the first level but soon I entered Seven Portals the game became unplayable...too slow for fights, textures disapearing suddenly, trees and Ettins start to blink (like a flashlight...), power-ups disapearing, no Autumn leaves at all and the skybox seems like a giant puzzle...

Is this a 3dfx problem?Or am I doing something wrong here?
Can you help? :-/
Could you take a screenshot and upload it into uploads folder (see forums menu). Maybe it's a problem with multitexturing. Try to disable it by typing in console:

gl_ext_multitexture 0
vid_restart

JP you're treading dangerous waters once again... the upload script's been coded by me so it does work, OK? ;D

Seriously, I just tried it and it worked fine, Janis you can delete the shot with the citymage from Scattered Evil

LOL, only Billy Sire is missing. ;D

Seriously I tried and it worked fine.

Of course uploading those 2-meg shots is not a good idea. Convert them to JPG format or at least zip them, OK.

That is quite strange...only the moving sprites are blinking...all the other textures, like walls, stones and floors and very good rendered...and so is my axe...
And this was not happening in the first level...

Tue, 23 Apr 2002 16:52:59

Janis Legzdinsh

Yes, the blinking happens only for world objects. And it depends on amount of objects potentially visible by you. And if there are too many, the network message simply overflows. Yep, that's one of the bad sides of the pure client/server architecture.

The blinking is a problem of the networking and nothing else.

Sorry man... it's just that I'm quite on the edge lately, with RavenGames.com alone having made 100'000+ pageviews in 24 days (not counting hosted sites/forums/satellites), this network is getting just too big. This means if anyone posts illegal stuff somewhere, chances are high some authorities will find out about it pretty soon. To top it off we're heading to 50+ GB transfer this month and that means a LOT of money, Camper has been highly complaining. As a result some parts of the network*will get ads, the first one is already up on http://www.ravenclans.com .

*before anyone starts to worry, there won't be any ads on - among others - the Korax' Heritage, Vavoom and old Ravencommunity sites, as I made a promise to all of them to remain ad-free forever. There won't be any banners on RavenGames neither (though there might be plain text ads on select pages, similar to the one on RavenClans.com).

OK, Janis...Now that this is quiet, you need to explain to me how the hell the network code interferes with the graphic engine?
How the hell the ass and the pants stick together?
I dont understand...how network code induces blinking moving sprites? ???

OK, here's how pure client/server works. It has two parts - a server and a client. Server is where all gameplay is happening. The client represents a player, it handles player input and sound/graphics output. These parts are working independently and are "talking" with each other over a network. When you are playing game, you are allways running over some network connection. In single player it's a loopback connection where messages are simply copied in the memory. For client, to know what he can see, server must send information about level state and objects potentially seen by client. Those message sizes are limited, and when they overflow, it doesn't include full information about objects seen. There are multiple ideas how to work around this. The first is "static objects", i.e. objects that doesn't move. Server could send information about them only at connection, and not every frame. The second is "temporary objects" handled by client. This can be used for all effects, just like particles are handled. The third is handle single player, or maybe local client, specially, where client is merged with server and has full level data. As you can see, there's a place for a work for a long time.

Now that was loooong (wonders to self) ;D
