in order to be able to compile vavoom, i need allegro and allegro-devel installed, right?
Right.
now, my linux-distribution, which is suse 7.3, comes with allegro < 4.0. so i downloaded the allegro 4.0.1 sources, compiled & installed it.
now, i dont know what this really did. do i have allegro and allegro-devel installed, now?
Yes.
is it right that an rpm-package called xxx-devel.rpm installes the sources of xxx?
No, it installs header files and precompiled static libraries needed to compile programs using this library.
if so, how do i do this, when i downloaded the sources as tarball?
Uninstall old version, compile and install them.
is there a specific place, they belong to?
Usualy libraries coming with distribution are installed into /usr filesystem while source versions installs themselves into /usr/local filesystem.
