An interesting quirk: if I play into 3rd level, once I try to portal back game crashes with following debug.txt:
Dev: Spawning server map01

Well, either SDL_mixer has taken over the moment MikMod got turned off (SDL_mixer is using modplug too - patches from upstream mercurial) or my file works (it even plays music on the first level). Is there a way to tell one way or the other ? I'm not sur

The only way to tell if your code works fine, would be to make sure SDL mixer doesn't use MikMod to play music, or you could add some kind of CVar to force using ModPlug instead of SDL mixer for doing so.

How does vavoom select the backend anyway ? It not really clear to me - neither the method nor which backend has priority. Any ideas about that crash ? Also, not to nag, but any new ideas about [url=http://vavoom-engine.com/forums/viewtopic.

Vavoom didn't had any way of telling which output to use for music for any format, it seems to create a list of available codecs for music playing but it used the first one it found to play music, I've created a couple of CVars that allow selecting which

Yes, I thought the sound was better for MIDI files with ModPlug, I'll remove the possibility of using it for playing such files. Since this has been implemented, I'll move it to the closed features suggestions.
